Mr. Choi is the Director of the Natural Gas practice at Altos. His primary areas of expertise include economic analysis, risk management, economic modeling, and portfolio analysis. During his 15-year career in management consulting, Mr. Choi has worked on a wide range of challenging issues facing the natural gas industry, including producers, pipelines, and local distribution companies. He has assisted senior management in client organizations make strategic decisions in face of uncertainty and price risk. Mr. Choi provided expert testimony before the Georgia State Public Service Commission on behalf of AGL Resources. He developed and applied a methodology to analyze supply portfolios.
For a consortium of international energy company, Mr. Choi led an economic analysis of LNG imports into the US. Using Altos’ MarketBuilder™, a software system for building complex quantitative economic models based on market fundamentals, he projected long-term energy prices and profitability of LNG deliveries to various terminals.
For a local distribution company, Mr. Choi performed strategic analysis of opportunities for expansion into new market regions. He analyzed profitability of a proposed pipeline and made recommendations to senior management. He also developed an analytical framework for valuing storage assets.
For the State of New Mexico, Mr. Choi led efforts to analyze economic feasibility of a state-sponsored project to build a pipeline from the San Juan basin to markets east. This project helped saved the state millions of dollars in a poor investment.
Provided expert testimony in support of a local distribution company’s capacity plan. Analyzed the companies supply requirements, existing portfolio, and competing bids for new capacity.
For an integrated energy company, Mr. Choi analyzed competitive challenges from a rival company. He projected changes in market share and profit margins. The analysis helped senior management set corporate strategy.
Prior to joining Altos, Mr. Choi worked as an independent consultant. He has conducted projects and lectures in Thailand, Vietnam, and South Korea. Major engagements included a project for the World Bank, where he analyzed the economic benefits of industrial pollution prevention in Vietnam. Results of his work were presented at the Energex ‘96 Conference in Beijing and are included in a World Bank report. For a major pharmaceutical firm, he forecast sales and profitability of one of the most profitable drugs in history and analyzed a decision to switch it from Rx to over-the-counter. Prior to working as an independent consultant, Mr. Choi was a Senior Associate with Decision Focus Incorporated, a pioneering management consulting firm in the application of decision science. As a senior member of the natural gas practice, he led a number of projects analyzing supply issues, R&D benefits, infrastructure management, and environmental risks. He has co-authored a number of articles in professional journals and conference proceedings.
Mr. Choi holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from University of California, Los Angeles (1979), and a Master of Science degree in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University (1986).
